Conservation and restoration of a knife polisher (19th-20th centuries) from the collection of the Ajuda National Palace (Lisbon). A rotary disc knife sharpening and cleaning machine manufactured by George Kent, High Holborn, London. The knives were placed in grooves on the top of the rotating oak box. Inside are roller sharpeners, buffers and felt bristles that clean and polish both sides of the knife simultaneously. An abrasive was introduced through the side chute. The rotary action (driven by an external crank) lifts the abrasive from the supply chute. This machine is placed on a paint-coated cast iron stand. This work, carried out under the coordination of Maria João Petisca, had the collaboration of Joana Sobral, both conservators-restorers.
